Overall graphic communication design

We have aimed to make the overall graphic communication design of this website accessible and usable which builds on best practice guidelines and research. We have also structured the various sections of this website and navigation bar into clear parts.

Website accessibility

We have used the latest HTML coding, utilizing navigation, main, footer, figure, section and heading tags which also conforms to the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) standards for valid HTML (HyperText Mark-up Language) and CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). However, some accessibility recommendations by the A11Y Project cause warnings and we decided to go with better accessibility than better validation of code. Our webpages pass many of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 requirements at levels A, AA and AAA, checked also using the WAVE Web Accessibility Tool. There are minor issues to do with lacking color contrast which stopped this website from achieving an even higher level. This website has also been tested using the ChromeVox screen-reader software and the VoiceOver accessibility option on a Mac. The Equality Act 2010 and The Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) Accessibility Regulations 2018 require websites to be accessible to W3C’s level AA guidelines.

Other accessibility features of this website include:

  • Logical and consistent coding and sectioning for webpage code and design.
  • Logical and consistent navigation for keyboard users.
  • A skip-nav (skip navigation bar) link for screen-reader and keyboard users.
  • We also conformed to the A11Y Project checklist (in July 2020).
  • Relevant and descriptive alt tags for images.
